Your highest self
Most of us want to change in some way, yet 90% of the time we stay the same. How can we become more disciplined? More motivated? It can be difficult, especially when we can’t see the finish line. And truthfully, when it comes to our health or weight, we expect results quickly. And when we don’t immediately start to see or feel results, we slowly go back to our old habits and behaviors. We then blame ourselves for not having enough willpower, or for not caring enough and this is simply not the case.
It must be a deliberate choice. And you must choose every single day. But, instead of focusing on what you are choosing to be doing, you must focus on what your highest self wants to be doing. Your thoughts, actions, and behaviors must come from your highest self. Your highest (or future) self is the person at the end of the finish line. The person your soul is wanting to become. It’s too easy to think about the healthy habits we could be doing and say to yourself “oh not today, I’ll do that tomorrow.” And then the next day the same thing happens, and the cycle continues with no changes. Instead, you have to think what your future/highest self would do. To get clear on this, I recommend journaling out what you envision your highest self to be like. What do they say to themselves, how do they act, how do they treat others, what habits do they stay committed too? Once you have done this, it gets easier and easier to stick with the habits you set for yourself because you are truly becoming your highest self each time. I also recommend meditating and envisioning your highest self. Superhuman app is a wonderful resource for this.
Another component to this is knowing deep down that you deserve to feel good, that you are worthy of what you desire. This can bring up strong emotions that maybe you haven’t had the chance to feel or think about until now. So be gentle with yourself because it can be a lot to unpack at first. We are not looking for judgment or criticism or shame, rather compassion, kindness, and forgiveness. It can be easy to imagine your highest self, but if you don’t believe you can be that person, for whatever reason, you will ultimately sabotage yourself and prevent yourself from becoming that person.
This is not something that will happen overnight, so it’s important to be patient with yourself as well. Each day, even if you don’t feel it yet, brings you closer and closer to your highest self if you stay committed. In addition to the other journaling ideas, you can also write out you “why” for staying committed to your highest self. Why is this something you want to be doing? Are you looking for more happiness, energy, love, health, overall vitality? Getting clear on this will be helpful when you start to fall off the wagon because it will bring you back into focus on the bigger picture. You can write out your why and place it on sticky notes throughout your home if you’d like. Whatever will help you to keep going during this process. It will become easier when you have established certain habits and routines for yourself that are in alignment with your highest self. Taking note of the habits and routines that are not in alignment with your highest self can also help you to become clear on what you need to let go of.
Remember, this is not a destination that you are getting to. It is a lifelong process. But with the right tools, habits, and routines, you can become your highest self each day and you will be thankful you did.
